McKercher serves individuals in one-on-one, small (2-4), and large (5-14)
groups depending
upon individual's
needs and preferences.
We also offer community based social/recreational or
cultural/educational experiences that can
accommodate medical, behavioral, or aging issues.
We do skill building based upon individual need.
Instruction offered in:
- community travel (bus training for Metro Transit bus routes), pedestrian
safety
- grooming, dress
- personal identification / social awareness/ manners
- pay phone usage
- library access / use of Internet
- community survival / emergencies / strangers
- money counting, budgeting, banking, checkbook use, ATM, paying bills
- stove top / oven / microwave cooking, meal planning, food preparation,
grocery shopping
- laundry / housekeeping
- development of table setting, food serving, customer service skills
- exercise (ambulatory and wheelchair), stress management
- current events
- consumer affairs
Day, evening or weekend outings
have included:
- computer classes at the Disability Resource Center
- creative arts (multi-media) classes; art classes/exhibits at the
Kalamazoo Art Institute, visits to art fairs
- swimming at the YMCA and Kalamazoo Valley Orthopedic Clinic
- bowling, putt-putt golf, nature walks, and trips to parks, zoos, fish
hatchery, baseball games, and more
- mall shopping
- gardening classes
- concerts, movies
- old car shows, visits to history museums
- community events such as the Black Arts Festival,
Festival of Lights, Taste of Kalamazoo, Greek Festival, and the butterfly exhibit at Meijer
Gardens in Grand Rapids
