Pathways' History
- 1976 - Kalamazoo County Community Health Board contracts with
Borgess/St. Joseph Lodge to develop a new program for people leaving the Kalamazoo State
Hospital (later called the Regional Psychiatric Hospital). It was called the Downtown
Activities Center and was housed at the YWCA.
- 1977 - Downtown Activities Center begins taking clients.
- 1978 - Adult education classes begin at the Downtown Activities
Center
- 1979 - Program moves to Water St. and is renamed the Rehabilitation
Aftercare Center, or RAC.
- Mid 1980's - Borgess opts to discontinue contract; Ministry with
Community offers to sponsor the program. A clubhouse atmosphere was created,
with patients becoming members and encouraged to become more involved with the program.
- Late 1980's - Member Advisory Council was formed; members chose
"Pathways" as the name of their new program.
- 1990 - Pathways receives grant from Catholic Diocese in Kalamazoo to
develop employment programs. Ministry with Community drops administrative
sponsorship.
- 1991 - MRC Industries, Inc., which had been providing
supportive employment since 1988, assumes administration of Pathways.
- 1995 - Pathways offers support to Universal & Universal, a
consumer-run business.
- 1996 - MRC launches a successful capital campaign and Pathways moves
to its new building at 119 W. Vine St. Pathways achieves CARF accreditation for its
clubhouse and employment programs.
- 1997 - Pathways celebrates its 20th Anniversary.
- 2001 - Corner Club, a Pathways program for people with mental illness
ages 18 - 30 is formed.
