Aqil’s Growth Through Youth CLS

For youth like Aqil, building confidence and independence in the community starts with developing the skills to navigate everyday interactions. Through MRC’s Community Living Supports (CLS) program, Aqil has been working on social skills that help him connect with others and feel more comfortable in community settings.

One area where Aqil has shown significant growth is understanding personal space and social cues. When he first began the program, he sometimes had difficulty recognizing when he was standing too close to others or when someone appeared uncomfortable during an interaction. This could make it challenging for him to engage appropriately with peers and adults.

Through consistent coaching and real-world practice at places like the YMCA, library, church, parks, and other community activities, Aqil has become more aware of how others respond during conversations. He is learning to recognize when someone is inviting conversation and when they may prefer additional space. He also responds well to reminders and is becoming more independent in adjusting his behavior with less prompting.

Aqil’s progress is an important step toward greater confidence and independence. By learning to recognize personal boundaries and social cues, he is building skills that will help him develop positive relationships, participate more successfully in his community, and navigate everyday interactions with greater independence.
